About me

>Menu>about>

I'm Jan Fortune-Wood. My first degree was in theology at Cambridge and I later completed a PhD in feminist theology. In the past I have worked as a teacher, priest and charity director and am currently a parenting adviser, writer, researcher and editor.

To give you a flavour of what informs my work I'm passionate about:

Writing - I'm a freelance writer and have written over fifty articles, chapters and books about children's autonomy and consent based education and living. Writing is also very important in my other areas of interest and you can see examples of poetry and find the details of the magazine which I edit here.

Home education - none of my four children go to school. You can find out more about home education here. Or about the campaign to extend the right of legal home education across Europe here

Liberty - The freedom to live lives based on consent and without routine intervention is fundamental to creativity, the growth of new knowledge and abundance. I like to question everything, particularly authority. I value rationalism. I'm a humanist and an optimist who believes that solutions are out there and that life can be lived well with autonomy and humanity.

Nurturing Children's Autonomy - the purpose of this site.
You can read an introductory article and several other articles on the articles link. You will also find summaries of my books on children's autonomy and parenting and links to getting advice.
