We run two conferences:

Home Education in England and Wales.

There are no official figures on how many home educators there are in the UK but it is widely accepted that there are in excess of fifty thousand in this rapidly growing community. This means that the average number of home educating children in each LEA is between 250 and 300, many of whom are unknown to their local authority.

This course will improve understanding about the diverse ways that families home educate and assist Local Authorities to develop legally supportable policies and positive relationships between themselves and the home education community.

The Conferences are for:

Anyone whose work brings them into contact with elective home educators, either directly or indirectly, particularly but not exclusively:

  • Educational Welfare officers
  • Educational Social Workers
  • Senior advisors
  • OFSTED inspectors
  • Social workers
  • LEA management teams
  • LEA policy makers
  • Those involved in training the above
  • Those interested in working in this area

How you will benefit:

Local Authorities will benefit by:

  • improving levels of best practice so that the service to and relationship with home educators is optimized.
  • reducing conflict, which improves productivity and efficiency
  • reducing the number of expensive and distressing legal cases brought by or against local authorities, including exposure to legal action in respect of human rights legislation.
  • providing a valuable part of an authority's ongoing staff development.

Staff will benefit from:

  • improved understanding of the nature and aims of the families they work with leading to greater confidence in their assessments
  • improved career opportunities by being able to demonstrate greater knowledge of the growing elective home education community
  • reduced stress and greater satisfaction in their work.
