When
you join a list, monitor the messages for a few days to get a feel
for what common questions are asked, and what topics are deemed
off-limits. This is commonly referred to as lurking. When you feel
comfortable with the group, then start posting.
-
When
quoting another person, edit out whatever isn't directly applicable
to your reply. Take the time to edit any quotations down to the
minimum necessary to provide context for your reply.
-
Avoid
sending 'I agree' and 'me too' posts to lists. It can be very disappointing
to download messages and find a few seconds worth of reading, usually
after scrolling through reams of quotes, instead of a good, interesting
read. If you feel it's important to show your support please send
it to the individual. (If you want the senders address included
in the body of the message send, in the message area of an e-mail,
SET UK-HOME-ED DUAL to listserv@listserv.aol.com)
-
Keep
subject lines relevant, particularly if the topic changes mid-thread.
-
Before
sending a reply, check the address. It can be very embarrassing
when personal messages are sent to lists.
-
When
answering a simple question such as a request for a web page address
it's worth checking just before sending that it hasn't been answered
already. However, a multiplicity of responses to more complex and
subjective matters is a strength of the list.
-
Aim
to keep the majority of your posts on-topic. (Add OT: to the beginning
of the subject line of any obviously off topic posts to help those
who choose to filter out off topic
posts.)
-
Avoid
flaming. Ask yourself 'would I say this to the persons face?' If
no, then rewrite and reread. It should be possible to criticize
ideas without attacking the individual.
-
Do
not copy private e-mails to lists without the senders permission.
-
Remember
that anything you write is likely to be stored on dozens of computers,
possibly for ever!
-
Avoid
asking list admin. questions on list. (Check the list How
do I...? FAQ pages here or e-mail UK-HOME-ED-REQUEST@LISTSERV.AOL.COM
to ask the listowners.)
-
Please
*DO NOT* post virus warnings to lists unless you have had them authenticated
by a recognized virus monitoring site. Many hoax virus warnings
circulate, often claiming to originate from the likes of IBM or
the Pentagon! Useful sites to check authenticity include Hoaxbusters
and Hoaxkill.
